Improve Fuel Mileage By Ridding Of Junk From The Trunk

All who are getting a good battering from the unrelenting gas prices are looking for whatever solutions they can find even for a small measure of relief. Ironically most of the affected motorists somehow demonstrate an uncanny inclination for looking far and wide for solutions completely oblivious to what is right under their noses.

It is therefore not surprising that some motorists have adopted the most extreme solutions such as either not using their vehicles anymore or going for a high cost Hybrid Cars combining a gasoline engine and electric motor for higher fuel savings.

Going for these extreme solutions could have been avoided if they had more reliance on much simpler methods of increasing the fuel mileage efficiency without incurring any additional costs. One such additional cost free, simple method is what I call the “junk inside the trunk” method. Let us have a closer look at it.

Some drivers knowingly or ignorantly carry junk in their trunks over long periods. These may be some junk items that had been put in the trunk for transport to some other place for disposal or as a temporary storage place to get extra room in your storeroom for some other purposes.

Improve Fuel Efficiency

Whatever it is, that is now a forgotten history presently affecting your fuel mileage efficiency unfavorably due to carrying an unnecessary load everywhere you go causing a drag on the vehicle that makes the engine to work harder guzzling excess gas in the process.

It is estimated that carrying a weight of 100 lbs. decreases your fuel efficiency by around one to two percent. If you feel it is an insignificant amount, consider for how long and over what mileage you would have been carrying this unnecessary load everywhere you went. Converting a gallon of gas at $ 4.00, 2% of it works out to $ 0.08. Depending on the exact weight of the junk and the mileage over which it would have been carried, the additional cost incurred in the long run could amount to a very significant amount. So resolve to take that junk out of your vehicle trunk, and get it over with immediately, lest you forget about it again for a further long period of time.

When people run out of space in their own homes and storerooms to keep unwanted items, they could think of the room in the luggage area of the vehicle as a good idea to dump those items temporarily pending a final decision on those items. This could be soon forgotten and the result would be your paying a high cost for it through a reduced fuel-mileage ratio as long as the junk remains in the trunk

Simple Ways To Save Gas

The above is only one of many simple and non-costly methods available for saving more money on gas. Don’t take the attitude of ignoring some additional costs as insignificant particularly at a time when you are already paying through your nose for gas. If it is possible to save even a small amount at the pump, do it. Small amounts over short periods can accumulate to significant amounts over long periods.

Irrespective of whether your vehicle is a car, van, sports utility or truck, do everything possible to improve its fuel efficiency. With gas prices showing no signs of abating in the foreseeable future, you cannot afford to disregard even the smallest benefits that could be turned to your advantage. As a first step in this direction, be rid of the junk load in your trunk!
