Top Ways To Reduce Gas UsageThe bane of most regular drivers is the gas prices that do not show any signs of abating in the foreseeable future. Having lived with it for so long, they have now come to accept it as an inevitable reality and only try to minimize what they spend on gas by limiting its usage as far as possible. It does not mean having the cars parked without running, but trying by various other means to increase the fuel-mileage ratio.
Save Gas Usage Tips TricksThough increasing the fuel efficiency may seem as a highly technical, daunting task at first, all the methods that work in achieving fuel economy are really the most basic and very simple procedures that are free except where any replacement of parts are necessitated. The main areas affecting fuel consumption are broadly (i) Driver Behavior and (ii) Vehicle Performance. Under driver behavior, we look into attitudes and styles of driving, and other non-mechanical aspects that come under human control such as detailed planning of trips as to what, when and where etc. Under Vehicle Performance, we are concerned with the performance of the vehicle especially with regard to areas affecting fuel consumption; by keeping to regular periodic checks and other specified maintenance operations.
Gas Saving Driving Style
Changing driver behavior to optimize fuel economy is mainly common sense and is very easy to implement. It entails planning to avoid peak traffic hours, avoiding congested and busy routes, avoiding duplication of trips and combining many possible trips into one etc. Last, but not the least, since the vehicle by itself cannot look into its own maintenance, keep a good track of due dates and other checks, and ensure their proper implementation. Many drivers find it difficult to drive at a more conservative speed like 55-mph on highways instead of 70 to 75-mph. Similarly, some cannot help the impulsiveness to speed even after seeing a red light ahead. This is the typical driver behavior that sends fuel consumption up. Driving at 75-mph consumes 25% more gas than you do at 55-mph. By speeding towards the stoplight, you have to brake hard to bring it to a stop and then start from a zero speed once the green light comes. All this takes an unnecessary heavy toll on your fuel economy and the braking system. Some drivers try to justify these unwanted aggressive acts in the cause of getting to the destination sooner, completely disregarding the very high price they pay for it in terms extra fuel etc. If you have to get somewhere on time, start a little earlier and save much dough than starting later and speeding to catch up on late time by exposing yourself to additional risks of getting a speeding ticket which could cost another $-200; not to mention the higher possibilities of accidents associated with very high speeds.
Performance Gas MilageWith regard to vehicle performance, keep track of recommended periodic maintenance measures such as oil changes, replacement of a clogged air filter (that can give you a 10% improvement on fuel economy) and spark plug, and more expensive engine tune-ups (better attended to by an experienced person) that can give up to 20% improvement on fuel economy subject to other factors. Regularly check the air pressure in tires and get it fixed free of charge at most pumping stations and car washes, and get rid of unwanted junk carried in the trunk of your vehicle where every 250 lbs. will cost you to the tune of 1 mile less on a gallon. This can build up to a considerable loss with time. Try to get the maximum performance from your vehicle by optimizing the areas already stated above. Despite all the savings on gas that can be easily yours, some drivers through their stubborn attitudes, especially with regard to AC, and slow driving, sacrifice many possible financial benefits, compelling them to still go to the pump quite often than they needed to have, if not for their obstinate and aggressive attitudes.
